Types of Industrial Tapes

Adhesive tape comes in many varieties for a range of industrial projects, especially those for which glues and epoxies are not suitable. Knowing which tape is best for your intended applications involves identifying the strength of adhesion required, the roughness or smoothness of the surface to be taped, and whether or not specialty tapes are needed. Most industrial tapes are pressure sensitive, as opposed to tapes whose adhesion is activated by heat or water. The most common types of tape include masking tape, flooring tape, duct tape, electrical tape, packing tape, painter’s tape, and double sided/mounting tape. This blog will cover each type and provide a description of its properties and uses.

Masking tape is a versatile, all-purpose tape available in many different levels of adhesive strength. Some varieties are lightweight and more easily removed than other types of tape. Delicate surface masking tape is ideal for wallpaper, laminated paneling, and other finished areas. Other types of masking tape are used with rougher textures. The next type of tape, flooring tape, features adhesives on both sides to secure rugs and carpets in place. Also known as carpet tape, it is flexible, durable, and moisture resistant, making is available for use in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Duct tape is an extremely popular and versatile tape. It can be used for nearly any project, such as HVAC, plumbing, construction, and more. Duct tape provides strong adhesion and can conform to cement, cloth, and other irregular surfaces. It features a mesh backing which increases its durability and makes it more resistant to moisture and abrasion. Be aware that, when removed, the adhesive may remove paint or sealant from painted walls or sealed wood floors. Electrical tape, also known as insulated tape, is specially designed to insulate wires and other materials that conduct electricity. It forms a water-tight seal and is commonly made from non-conductive vinyl materials. Certain varieties are flame-retardant, cold-resistant, and UV-resistant.

Packing tape, as its name suggests, is used to seal corrugated boxes and other containers for shipment or storage. It works best with a tape gun and usually must be cut with a blade or sharp surface. Packing tape is usually transparent and seals quickly for a strong hold. Like masking tape, painter’s tape is designed specifically for painting applications, where it is used to protect door frames, trim, floor boards and more. It comes in various widths and distinctive colors so it can be easily distinguished from paint. It has a relatively weak adhesive that allows it to come off cleanly without leaving residue. Despite this, stronger types are available for automotive and spray painting.

Lastly, double sided or mounting tape, also known as anti-slip tape, features a layer of adhesive on both sides of the tape surface. It is available in both strips and small, square foam pads and can be used to hang posters, pictures, and lightweight objects on walls, depending on the adhesive strength. Double sided tapes are available in thinner versions for use on smooth surfaces like glass or metal and thicker versions for rough surfaces including wood or brick.
