In electricity and electrochemistry, a battery is considered any class of devices that convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy. While the term battery technically only applies to assemblies of two or more galvanic cells, it is also regularly used to describe single cell assemblies as well. Every battery or cell consists of a cathode (positive) and an anode (negative). These electrodes must be separated by an electrolyte that permits the passage of ions from the cathode to the anode. In most configurations, the electrodes are entirely immersed by the electrolyte. The electrode materials and electrolyte are specifically chosen so that sufficient electromotive force, which is measured in volts, and electric current, measured in amperes, can be generated between the two terminals and provide the power to operate lights, machines, and a myriad of other devices.

Commercial batteries are designed and produced with their intended application and other market factors in mind. The quality of materials and complexity of the electrode/container design are reflected in the market price of any battery. Batteries are divided into two main groups: primary and secondary (or storage). Primary batteries are intended for use until the voltage is too low to operate a given device. At this point, they are discarded. Secondary batteries have many special design features, as well as particular materials for the electrodes that allow them to be recharged and reused.
